How to be a Witch

I’m frequently seeing Facebook posts asking things like “how do I become a Witch?” or “how can I bring more magic into my life?”.  Normally, I scroll by with a mild eye roll, but I’m trying to be more open, kind, and patient so I compiled a list of 30 things you can do One A Day style.  So here they are in no particular order…

  • Choose 3-5 plants/herbs and research them. Are they masculine? feminine? What is their magical use? Are they edible? Are they medicinal?
  • Sit down and and write out a personal Statement of Ethics. Do you follow the Threefold Law? Believe in Karma? Where is your line in the sand? You might surprise yourself…
  • Research a masculine deity that appeals to you.
  • Research a feminine deity that appeals to you.
  • Research the Lunar cycle(New/Waxing/Full/Waning) and what kind of magic traditionally works best at each phase.
  • Write a spell for something joyful.
  • Research the Solar festivals.
  • Find/watch/read a blog done by a Witch you admire.
  • Research a deity that makes you feel uncomfortable.
  • Research a form of divination that you’ve never used before.
  • Record a vivid dream.
  • Take a walk in your local park and pick up litter.
  • Create (and take) a magical bath/shower.
  • Buy (or plant) a plant for your bedroom.
  • Start a Book of Shadows or create a new page in yours.
  • Create a meal that includes foods that resonate with all four Cardinal Elements.
  • Read a book – any book.
  • Get up before dawn and Sing the Sun awake.
  • Create a space in your home for recycling. If you already recycle, reinforce it.
  • Create a ‘critter feeder’. Use pb, seeds, whatever your locals like and leave it where the critters can safely get to it.
  • Leave an offering for your local nature spirits.
  • Create a playlist of songs that make you feel Witchy.
  • Buy/make an article of clothing or jewelry that makes you feel Witchy.
  • Wash your front door with a spiritual wash. Bless it, and cast a protection.
  • Hug a tree. Yes, I’m serious.
  • Walk barefoot in the grass.
  • Create an ancestor altar.
  • Bake a loaf of bread from scratch.
  • Take a yoga class (youtube vids count) and focus on the mind/body connection.
  • Stand outside and let the wind blow through you.

This is barely scratching the surface, but it’s the advice I would give anyone just starting. Also, some of these things are great to do every day.  Others, may change over time. Just remember that everyone’s path is unique to them and while it may travel along side of your own for a time, it doesn’t make it the same.  Be patient, what you need will find you. Be curious, it will lead you to yourself.  Be brave, what happens will happen.
